Information from the Principal

Welcome to Ocean Academy Poole!

Ocean Academy Poole is a three form entry junior school which opened in September 2015. It currently has three Year 3 classes, three Year 4 classes and three Year 5 classes. In September 2018 we will be complete with Years 3 to 6.

This is the third AAT academy in the South Coast District and the eleventh  academy of fourteen in the trust as a whole.

Our South Coast District includes Magna Academy Poole (11-18 years) , Jewell Academy Bournemouth (4-11 years) and Atlantic Academy Portland (4-18 years). Ocean Academy will grow parallel to Jewell Academy, which also opened its year 3 classes in September 2015. Both Magna and Jewell were rated as outstanding in all areas by Ofsted in June 2015.

This partnership locally, and the wider Trust partnership (West London and Banbury), provides a wide experience and skills base upon which to draw. The Aspirations curriculum has been followed across the Trust and there is now a wealth of expertise and resources to support each academy.

Ocean Academy Poole has a curriculum that is broad and balanced, fun and engaging, with a strong local flavour as well as having national and global relevancy. We are, after all, preparing children for global citizenship in the twenty first century. The academy curriculum will grow around the needs and interests of the pupils as well as covering the National Curriculum.

By the time pupils leave Ocean Academy, they will have developed strong literacy and numeracy skills; strong computing skills; have a good knowledge of the world in which they live; and have a desire for life-long learning. Every child is unique and talented. We believe in developing the WHOLE CHILD. Children’s emotional, social, moral, cultural, physical and creative skills are developed alongside their academic skills and thinking skills. Building a child’s self-esteem and confidence is an important part of our role.

Our aim is to support every child to reach their potential and to have a thirst for learning and a resilience to face challenges now and in the future….. and have fun and excitement whilst learning!

We all learn from our mistakes, so every child needs to understand that it is OK to make mistakes and try again to move our learning on. We will be a CAN-DO learning community!

Our smart uniform links all our pupils in the South Coast District and immediately gives our pupils a strong sense of identity and belonging.

There are numerous opportunities for parents and carers to join in the learning journey at Ocean Academy, as we all know that parental involvement in a child’s education is key to good progress and development.

The facilities at Ocean Academy are fantastic! We have a large hall,  and a studio area.   We have a fabulous green outdoor environment, in which we are developing quiet seating spaces, activity spaces, gardening allotments, a full size football/rugby pitch, a MUGA (Multi use games area) for other ball games and a woodland area, which will support the science and environment curricula.

The computing curriculum will be taught through the most up to date hardware and software, infrastructure and connectivity, supported by the technicians at Magna Academy. Tablet computers will be available in every classroom as well as access to laptops and desktops.

There is also a food technology room where we teach cooking and use the produce that we grow in our own allotment gardens!

There are, of course, excellent classrooms, well resourced, bright and inviting. There are smaller rooms for interventions and extra group support and a library/learning resource centre.

Our whole staff team has been chosen for their desire to build Ocean Academy Poole to meet these aims, to provide the best education for our pupils, and to make learning fun and engaging. We foster curiosity and creativity. We build a strong Academy family where everyone is a valued member of the team; where everyone is willing to “roll their sleeves up and get stuck in” to the job of leading learning!

We hope families will choose Ocean Academy Poole because they believe in our aims and want to join in the partnership with the school to support their children’s learning and development. We will be working TOGETHER to be the best we can be.

There is a comprehensive transition process for children, who  transfer from a number of local infant schools. Staff will visit children in their infant school during the summer term and will meet with families and current teachers too.

We have:

  • A breakfast club from 7:30am daily
  • open classrooms from 8:30am
  • an after school club until 6pm
  • a wide range of after school activities including various sports and arts
  • Community use of the excellent facilities
  • A PTA who support the school through fundraising and putting on events.
We want children to thrive in this exciting learning environment, with the support of a positive staff team and an inspiring curriculum. Every child will be nurtured and encouraged to develop and grow, supported and challenged to succeed.

The website gives only a flavour of the possibilities (a drop in the Ocean!). We are happy to give tours and discuss the needs of your child on an individual basis, so please make an appointment…. We are looking forward to meeting you soon!
